Your kitchen sink is constantly bombarded with food leftovers, grease and oil. That’s why the best way to prevent a clog is to keep your drain free of such build-ups. So, here is how to clean a kitchen sink drain easily:
Time needed: 10 minutes.
Bring a few cups of water to the boil. The easiest way is to just put on the kettle. Keep in mind that for PVC and plastic pipes, the water should be below boiling temperature to avoid any damages to the piping.
Stir some dish soap into the hot water.
Take your hot soapy water and carefully pour it down the drain.
Let the water sit for about 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes have passed, run some cold tap water down the drain to loosen up any leftover build-ups.
Bring some more water to the boil and pour it down the drain to completely remove any leftovers.
For increased cleaning power, you can pour a cup of salt in your drain before flushing it with hot water. This will work wonders to get rid of bad drain smells as well.
Nobody wants their kitchen to smell like rubbish or old food. That’s why it’s important to clean and deodorise your sink drain regularly. Luckily, that’s not a hard task at all!
And voila! All the nasty odours will have disappeared from your kitchen sink.
If you have a garbage disposal, food leftovers may get caught in the blades, resulting in blockages and some nasty smells. So, make sure cleaning the garbage disposal makes it onto your to-do list.
The best way to keep your kitchen sink clean and smelling fresh is to maintain it regularly, so include it on your kitchen cleaning checklist. Flush it with hot water at least once a week.
Avoid putting fat, oil, grease and any food leftovers down the drain to prevent it from clogging. If your dishes and cookware are greasy, wipe them with some paper towels before washing them in the sink.
Try not to use traditional soap in your kitchen sink to avoid the build-up of soap scum.
